WCC Automotive Cybersecurity Lab, IT programs

September 8, 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Washtenaw Community College (WCC) will host an open house and Computer Science and IT Expo from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, September 8, in its new Automotive Cybersecurity Lab. Current and prospective students interested in learning about the college’s programs for in-demand cyber careers and other computer science and technology programs are invited.

The new lab is located in the Business Education Building, Room 160.

WCC offers a range of associate degrees and certificates to educate and train students for jobs of the future in a more digitized and data-driven world. Low tuition and ease of transfer to four-year colleges where students can complete their bachelor’s degrees are key differentiators.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 667,600 new jobs will be created in computer and technology occupations by 2030. An example of some median salaries include $107,628 for computer network architects; $94,515 for information security analysts; and $70,616 for computer programmers.

WCC has been recognized as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education by the U.S. National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security. The college offers a Cybersecurity Associate Degree, an Automotive Cybersecurity Certificate and other cyber certificates.

This new lab features Umlaut workbenches that bring vehicle infotainment and other key systems from real production vehicles into the classroom. Here, attack surfaces are investigated with a focus on techniques to provide insight into creating secure automotive systems. Students complete hands-on exercises to test security related to automobile networks and related infrastructure.

The college debuted its new Automotive Cybersecurity Lab at a July press conference featuring Michigan’s Lieutenant Governor, who visited campus to launch a promotion of $6 million in new wrap-around support grants for Michigan Reconnect, a state tuition program for prospective students 25 and older.

Register now for the September 8 Computer Science and IT Expo.
