On December 7, the Michigan Chronicle hosted ‘Legacy in Motion’ at Cobo Center to honor movers, shakers and newsmakers of the year.
This year’s theme, “Living for the City” honored individual accomplishments and corporate contributions to the betterment of Detroit.
Quicken Loans was named ‘Company of the Year’ with Vice President David Carroll accepting the award on behalf of the company. The newspaper selected Quicken Loans for our growth, culture and passion for improving Detroit’s community. We’re happy to share the award with co-recipient, Prestige Automotive Group, whose four auto dealerships have gained national prominence with impressive annual sales and commitment to the community. The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to legendary Motown founder, Berry Gordy, Jr., for his contributions to music and Detroit’s role in defining pop culture. As a songwriter, entrepreneur and visionary, he continues to inspire many around the world and premiered a new Broadway hit, “Motown the Musical,” earlier this year.
Newsmaker of the Year was awarded to Detroit Mayor-Elect, Mike Duggan, who despite a number of challenges was able to run a successful campaign based on a pledge that “every neighborhood has a future.” He will take office January 1, 2014.
The Community Spirit Award was given to Starr Commonwealth, who for 100 years has served children, adults and families through transformational programs that help troubled youth discover their greatness.
2013 News Makers Awards went to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, for their promotion of academic excellence and community outreach; Bishop P.A. Brooks, founding pastor of New St. Paul Tabernacle for his continuous leadership in faith-based service; and, U.S. Representative Gary Peters, for his work in ensuring the survival of the auto industry and dedication to strengthening Michigan’s economy.

Mosaic Youth Theatre Michigan Chronicle Legacy in Motion – Quicken Loans Zing Blog
The evening began with a Motown tribute presented by the Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit and Ed Gordon served as Master of Ceremonies. Award recognition was followed by an afterglow, where attendees mingled with guests such as U.S. Representative John Conyers and members of Real Times Media and the Michigan Chronicle.
