SEMCA Michigan Works! Partners with Monroe Dodge Superstore and Monroe County Community College to Kick off National Apprenticeship Week

SEMCA Michigan Works!, in partnership with Monroe Dodge Superstore and Monroe County Community College (MCCC), unveils a pioneering initiative to mark the 9th Annual National Apprenticeship Week. This union presents a novel Registered Apprenticeship Program, notably introducing the inaugural Automotive Tech Specialist Apprenticeship Program in Monroe County.

Monroe Dodge Superstore, a family-owned dealership with a legacy dating back to 1966, has partnered with MCCC to establish a two-year apprenticeship program. The first-of-its-kind apprenticeship in Monroe County is a two-year program where apprentices are compensated at a competitive wage with no out-of-pocket expenses (thus, no incurred debt). Apprentices learn and develop skills through on-the-job training at the dealership, combined with traditional college coursework. Upon completion of the program, the apprentice earns a national certification from the U.S. Department of Labor.

National Apprenticeship Week 2023 runs November 13-19. This year’s theme “Registered Apprenticeship: Superhighway to Good Jobs,” highlights the proven success of Registered Apprenticeships as an industry-driven training model. This initiative aims to expedite the pathway into high-quality jobs while promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) in the workplace.

Ralph Mahalak, Jr. of Monroe Dodge Superstore expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “The Low Payment Kings at the Monroe Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram Superstore are very proud and excited to partner with the SEMCA Michigan Works! and the US Department of Labor to kick off National Apprenticeship Week.”

The Automotive Tech Specialist Apprenticeship Program addresses the shortage of skilled technicians in the automotive industry, providing a unique opportunity for individuals to gain hands-on experience and academic knowledge. Interested parties are invited to attend a special meeting at the Monroe Dodge Superstore on Monday, November 13, to learn more about apprenticeship opportunities.

Peter Coomar, Dean of the ASET Division at Monroe County Community College, highlighted the program’s benefits, stating, “This will help us develop an even better relationship with our local dealership and help us to plan a stronger curriculum in automotive. We hope to have more dealerships onboard. Apprenticeship is a national initiative.”

Upon completion of the Related Training Instruction (RTI) curriculum, apprentices can apply credit coursework towards a certificate or degree from MCCC.
